Toilet tiling looks like a simple job until the new tiles start lifting a few months later. Usually the tiles were never the real problem. This page helps you pick the right person for the job, and it follows the same approach as our toilet ceiling contractor recommendation for readers comparing trades.

Who to Call for HDB Toilet Tiling: Our Recommendation

A good HDB toilet tiler has done HDB toilets before, checks the floor before quoting, and puts the scope and warranty in writing. If you want an HDB tiling specialist recommendation, measure everyone against those three points, including us.

Leng Painter is one option that meets those tests. Our service range covers toilet flooring and tiling, alongside spalling concrete repair, plastering and mould ceiling treatment, so you can raise a concrete problem under the tiles in the same enquiry. A reliable toilet tiling contractor in Singapore should also be happy to have their answers checked, and the sections below show you how to check them.

What a Reliable HDB Toilet Tiling Contractor Looks Like

Three things separate a reliable tiler from an average one: recent HDB toilet experience, prep work written into the quote, and a site visit before any price is given. Anyone who quotes over WhatsApp without seeing the floor is guessing.

How to Spot a Trusted Tiler for an HDB Toilet

An HDB toilet is a small wet area, and the floor has to fall towards the trap so water drains instead of pooling. Older flats often have cement floors that are uneven or patched, and a tiler who has only done large condo bathrooms may not know how to deal with that.

Ask how many HDB toilets they have retiled recently, and ask for the block types if they can share them. A vague answer tells you something. So does an answer that lists real jobs without hesitation.

Then ask what prep work is in the quote. Hacking off old tiles, levelling the floor, checking the fall and clearing the debris should all be there as written items. We put a longer list in our guide to questions to ask a toilet floor retiler, which is worth reading before you call anyone.

Registration, Insurance and a Clear Point of Contact

You should be able to verify a few basics without any awkwardness. Ask for the company's business registration (the UEN), and ask for proof of insurance that covers the workers and any damage to neighbouring units. Hacking and drilling travel through concrete, and your neighbour's ceiling is the first place a mistake shows up.

Ask for one named contact who will answer your calls from the quote to the final handover. If three people each tell you something different, the job will run the same way.

Retiling usually means hacking off the old tiles, and HDB's renovation rules cover that kind of work. Ask who applies for any permit, when noisy work is allowed, and how the corridor and lift lobby will be protected. Check HDB's current renovation guidelines yourself so you know what the answer should be.

If an interior designer is coordinating your renovation, ask who physically does the tiling. It may be a subcontractor you never meet, which is fine only if someone is clearly responsible for the result. Our piece on contractor versus interior designer for repairs explains the trade-off for ceilings, and the same logic applies here.

Check What Is Under the Tiles Before You Retile

Hollow-sounding tiles near the floor trap, or edges that lift along the wall base, often point to a bond or waterproofing problem under the tiles. Laying new tiles straight over that tends to repeat the failure, so checking the floor first belongs in the scope of the job.

Signs the Problem Is Under the Tiles

You can check most of these yourself in ten minutes. Tap the tiles with a coin or your knuckle and listen for a hollow sound. Look closely at the edges around the floor trap and along the wall base.

  • Hollow-sounding tiles. The tile is no longer bonded to the floor.

  • Lifting edges near the floor trap. Water is probably getting underneath.

  • Rust stains or flaking concrete at the wall base. The steel inside the concrete may be corroding.

  • Damp or stains on a nearby ceiling. Water is getting through the floor.

If the ceiling below or beside the toilet is actively dripping, treat it as urgent and don't wait for a renovation slot. Our guide on the signs you need a spalling concrete inspection covers what flaking and rust usually mean.

Not every cracked tile means a full retile. If only a few tiles are damaged and the floor sounds solid, repairing a few cracked bathroom tiles may be enough.

When Waterproofing or Concrete Needs Fixing First

New tiles over failed waterproofing or spalled concrete hide the problem; they do not fix it. The water keeps going where it was going, and the damage carries on underneath a fresh surface until the new tiles lift too.

So the repair comes first. Leng Painter's concrete repair work can handle the concrete step, and we can tell you after a site visit whether your floor needs it. Any quote you receive should also state whether the waterproofing layer is being checked or redone, and who is doing it.

This is the main reason a tiling quote without a site visit is unreliable. Nobody can price what they haven't seen under the old tiles.

Portfolio and Reviews: How to Check a Tiler Before You Hire

A portfolio and reviews can't prove a tiler will do your job well. They can show whether the tiler has done work like yours, and whether past customers were still happy after the first few months.

Reading a Portfolio: What Real HDB Work Looks Like

Ask for recent photos of HDB toilet jobs rather than stock images or showroom shots. Real HDB work looks like your toilet: small, with a floor trap, a service shaft, and walls that aren't perfectly square.

Then look at the details that show care, because anyone can make a wide photo look good:

  • Grout lines should be even and the same width throughout.

  • The joint where floor meets wall should be neat and sealed, not patched.

  • The tiles cut around the floor trap should fit tightly, with the pattern still lining up.

Cuts around the trap are where a rushed tiler gets caught out.

Reviews and References You Can Actually Check

Read dated Google reviews for specifics about the job instead of counting stars. A review that mentions the toilet size, what went wrong and how it was fixed is worth ten that say "good service". Check the dates too, since a run of five-star reviews in one week is worth a second look.

Ask for references you can call, ideally an HDB owner whose toilet was done more than six months ago. You are asking one thing: are the tiles still firm and the grout still intact?

Warranty on Workmanship: What to Get in Writing

A workmanship warranty turns a promise into something you can enforce. If it exists only as a verbal "don't worry, we'll come back", you have nothing to point to when a tile lifts.

What a Workmanship Warranty Should Cover

Ask any tiler, Leng Painter included, for the warranty terms in writing before you agree to anything. The document should name what is covered, how long it runs, what it excludes and how a claim is made.

Cover should include tiles lifting or coming loose, grout breaking up, and leaks from the tiling work. Exclusions are normal, and a warranty that excludes nothing should make you suspicious. Typical ones are damage from impact, damage from other trades working later, and problems from floor defects that were reported but not repaired.

That last exclusion is why the prep work matters. If you declined a floor repair that the tiler recommended, the warranty may not cover what happens next, and you should know that before you sign.

Finally, find out how to make a claim. Who do you message, how soon will someone visit, and is a visit free during the warranty period? Those answers belong on paper as well.

Affordable Toilet Tiling Means Comparing Like for Like

The cheapest quote is often cheapest because something is missing. Two quotes for the same toilet can differ mainly on scope. One may include old tile removal, floor base repair and waterproofing, while the other only covers new tiles and laying, so comparing totals alone hides the gap.

An affordable toilet tiling contractor is one whose price covers the job you actually need, not the one with the lowest number on page one. If you want price ranges, our toilet retiling cost guide has them, and this page stays on choosing the tiler.

Line Items That Make Two Quotes Comparable

Lay the quotes side by side and check that each has these lines:

  • Removal of old tiles

  • Floor base repair or levelling, and the fall to the trap

  • Waterproofing, with who does it

  • New tiles, adhesive and grout, with the tile type named

  • Disposal of old tiles and debris

  • Protection of the corridor and lift lobby

Where one quote is missing a line, ask the tiler whether it is excluded or simply left unwritten. If it is excluded, add a cost for it and compare again. Our guide on how to compare quotes line by line is written for ceiling work, but the method is the same.

Get a Direct Quote from a Toilet Retiling Company in Singapore

You will get a more accurate quote if you send the right details up front. Send these:

  1. Your flat block and type (for example, the block number and whether it is a 3-room or 4-room)

  2. The toilet size, even a rough length and width

  3. Photos of the whole floor, plus close-ups of any hollow or lifting tiles

  4. Photos of any stains or damp on the nearby ceiling

  5. Your preferred timing

Tell us plainly whether you think the job is tiling, concrete repair or both. If you are not sure, say that, and send the photos anyway. We will tell you what we see and whether a site visit is needed.

This service has limits. If your plan is a full gutting of the toilet or re-plumbing, a general renovation contractor may suit you better. We focus on tiling, concrete and surface repair, and we'd rather say so than take a job that isn't ours.

When you're ready, contact Leng Painter directly by call or message through the contact page, and send the details above.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest toilet tiling quote safe to accept?

Only if it covers the same work as the others. Cheap quotes often leave out old tile removal, floor base repair, waterproofing or disposal, and you pay for those later. Compare the line items first, then compare the totals.

What happens if the tiler finds spalling concrete after the old tiles come off?

The concrete should be repaired before any new tiles go down. Retiling over spalled concrete only hides it, and the new tiles will fail the same way. Ask the tiler beforehand how this will be handled and priced, and get the answer in writing.

Can I fix a few cracked tiles instead of retiling the whole toilet?

Yes, if the floor sounds solid and there is no damp, lifting near the trap or stained ceiling nearby. Hollow-sounding tiles, lifting edges or stains point to a problem under the tiles, and a patch won't fix that. In that case check the floor first.

Should I hire a tiler directly or go through an interior designer?

If the toilet is the only job, going directly gives you one named contact and no middle layer. If you are renovating the whole flat, a designer may coordinate better. Either way, ask who physically does the tiling and who is responsible if it fails.

How do I check that a tiler's reviews are real?

Read dated Google reviews for details about the job, such as toilet size and how problems were solved. Be wary of many generic five-star reviews posted close together. Then ask for a past customer you can call and check whether their tiles are still firm.
